About Us
The success story that is McNulty’s began in Ballinameen where Gerry McNultys father and mother, Danny and Mary, owned a carpet fitting business. Danny was highly respected and well known as a carpet supplier and fitter in Roscommon and far beyond. Gerry learned the business from his father as did his sisters, Kaithriona and Bernadette, who are deeply involved in McNulty’s Furniture.
He opened his shop in Roscommon Town in October 1987. “I chose Roscommon because it was a town that was growing at that time. We started in Castle Street in a very small shop across the road from the Royal Hotel,” he remembered. From these small buildings, grew quickly.
McNulty’s began selling carpet and floor covering but after just a year the demand in the town and surrounding areas had become so great that they moved to the Old Astor Buildings. However, even the new location couldn’t cater for the demand and in 1989, business had grown so much that McNulty’s moved to its existing location on the Golf Links Road. The business quickly flourished at its new location and continues to do so to the present day.
“When we moved to the Golf Links Road we branched into furniture. I remember the day we moved to the Golf Links Road and had the larger showroom for carpets and floor covering and then how quickly the demand grew for furniture,” Gerry said. “People were coming from all around Roscommon but also from further afield and that was when he started building up customer loyalty. We developed long-standing friendships with customers because of the way we looked after people,” he emphasised.
Another important part of the McNulty’s success, is how recognisable the staff are. “The staff are recognised by the customers, some members of staff have been working here for 22 or 23 years and some have been working here since they left school,” Gerry explained.
McNulty Store Manager Ross Shannon is one of the best-known staff members. Ross has been an integral part of McNulty’s for 17 years, during which he has played a key role in helping to develop and grow the business. He is well-known in sporting and business circles throughout the county. Ross is a former manager of the Roscommon minor football team whom he guided to a Connacht title in 2011 and also enjoyed a successful playing career with Roscommon Gaels. Gerry has always tried to be in the store as often as possible himself. This has become more difficult over the years as he has to travel a lot to source furniture as the demands of the business have grown. “We want the best quality furniture in order to give as good a value as possible for our customers so I have been sourcing furniture from around the world,” Gerry noted.
The growth of the business continued into the nineties. In 1993 McNulty’s tripled the size of its store and three years later they opened another store across the road. That has now become McNulty’s Bedding store. “Over the years we moved away from flooring to concentrate on furniture. One of our most valued staff members, Gabriel Lynch, took over the flooring part of the business and opened Lynch Flooring,” Gerry commented.
McNulty’s is the hub of a busy shopping area on the Golf Links Road where businesses such as Lynch Flooring, The Pepper Mill, Carmel’s Curtains, Mark Lohan Kitchens and Longford Tile Centre complement one another. It is an area with ample free parking and where customers can enjoy shopping without any hassle.
Even in the changing times of the last few years McNulty’s continues to remain a strong business. “Even though the country had slowed down a lot, McNulty’s has remained busy thanks to our loyal customers. We have different generations of the same family coming here to shop,” Gerry outlined.
Over the last 30 years McNulty’s has become a by-word for quality and has a nationwide reputation which sees customers coming from Dublin and Cork for their furniture needs.
